StoryCode is a non-profit community hub for independent immersive and cross-platform storytellers; supporting, incubating and showcasing projects created by them.

The founders of StoryCode established a group called Transmedia NYC on Meetup.com in February 2010 in response to a meteoric rise of industry and public interest in cross-platform storytelling. The group quickly grew from a handful of creators and enthusiasts to close to 600 active members within the first year.

During the first year, the meetup's monthly events were hosted by a variety of global advertising agencies including J. Walter Thompson and EuroRSCG. Past presenters have included Mike Monello of Campfire, Lance Weiler of Pandemic 1.0, Joel McConvey of the Canadian National Parks Project and Marcel Guerra from Showtime's DEXTER: The ARG. In early fall 2011 the group moved into a new event and meeting space at the Elinor Bunin Monroe Theater at Lincoln Film Center.

Recognizing that the group's needs had outgrown the meetup platform, the organizers formed a non-profit organization to expand the programming. StoryCode was designed to provide resources, grants for projects and mentoring assistance to storytellers while still providing the same kinds of informative events and presentations true to the original meetup platform. In its role as a 501(c)(3) organization, StoryCode will be creating value for its members and the larger film, art, technology, theater, game and television worlds through programs and events.

The work we do over the course of 2012 - our first operating year - will include the following:

  • MONTHLY MEETUPS – existing monthly meetup program (transmedia case studies, presentations and panels)
  • IMMERSIONS – focused working sessions to develop technology expertise within the creative community
  • STORY HACKATHONS – first-of-its-kind organized story "hacks" that bring a hacker approach into the world of storytelling, filmmaking and theater
  • ONLINE COMMUNITY EVENTS – storycode.org is an online repository of knowledge, reference and tools for immersive storytellers
